Abstract

The Spaces Between: a short history of artists' use of telecommunications

Artists working in the global space of telecommunications networks have always been faced with the dilemma that, on the one hand, the rapid mutation and/or obsolescence of the technology of production and distribution makes the life-span of telecomm-based works very short and, on the other hand, that telecomm-based work is usually unrecognisable as art until after the technology on which it is based has mutated and/or disappeared.
Robert AdrianÂÂÂÂ’s talk addresses this problem with some examples of early (pre-internet) projects using fax, slow-scan TV, amateur (ham) radio and computer conferencing.
