Abstract
"Phatic Communication and the Deconstruction of the Game Interface"
The Exhibition Games. Computerspiele von Künstlerinnen presented several artistic deconstructions of the popular and classic computer games, such as ratio agendi #3 – Pong (2003), Painstation (2001), Atari-Noise (1999), The ASCII Unreal (1999) and QQQ (2002). Players of the Painstation are punished with an electric shock, a wave of heat and/or a whiplash for every mistake they make and in the adaptation of Pong the playground of the game is projected onto the floor of the exhibition room, and the players have to play Teletennis as if it was a real game of tennis. Many of these deconstructions are based on a disordering of the interface. The presentation focused the role of the phatic communication plays in the derailment of the gaming interface.
