Abstract

For the expo02 in Biel, Switzerland, meso designed and implemented the media design for an electronic Swiss „Badi“ commissioned by 3deluxe architects. (expo.02.ch, www.3deluxe.de, www.cyberhelvetia.ch)
The result was a media environment playing with the topics of communication and community, depicted in the metaphor of flowing liquid and aquatic beings. Dozens of visitors can simultaneously interact with this environment, a situation that's simultaneously confusing and relaxing, meditative and explorative - an approach to what could be called "irritainment". The technical implementation on the concept raised a plethora of issues, which were solved by a modular rapid prototyping approach:

We present the graphical authoring system "vvvv", under development at meso in parallel to the progress of commercial projects, a multimedia toolkit addressing the specific problems of distributed real time media installations. Further on, we discuss various technical and aesthetical considerations of the design and the implementation of "mixed reality" spaces.
